Flying-fox roost management notification form

The purpose of this notification form is to enable the department to record the type and extent of authorised flying-fox roost management actions being undertaken in order to improve roost management practices and conservation outcomes for flying-foxes in Queensland.

Background and important information

Please note that this form is only for use by:

  • local governments proposing to undertake as-of-right management in an urban flying-fox management area, in accordance with the Code of practice—Ecologically sustainable management of flying-fox roosts (the Code). The Code requires local governments and entities to notify the department at least two business days prior to commencing any management action. If urgent action is needed contact us at wildlife.management@des.qld.gov.au.
  • persons or organisations who have a flying-fox roost management permit authorising management actions to be undertaken.

Where proposed actions are ‘low impact’ as defined under the Code of practice—Low impact activities, they are exempt from requiring a notification. This form does not need to be completed if only low impact actions are being undertaken.

This form must be submitted for one location only (see further guidance under Section 5. Management actions below) and for one four-week period at a time. Further forms cannot be submitted until current actions have ceased or within a 48-hour period of the current form expiring. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in the notification form being deemed invalid.

      If there is evidence of breeding and/or rearing activity, consideration should be given to avoiding roost management activities as any disturbance can result in additional distress that can cause pregnant females to abort foetuses, and injury or death in dependent young.

    Note: This notification is valid for all notified management actions conducted at the specified roost within a four-week time frame from the specified start date.

    In the circumstance that flying-foxes move to a secondary site, if you are satisfied that the secondary site does not meet the definition of a flying-fox roost under the NC Act an additional notification is not required to manage the secondary site. However, an additional notification is required to manage the secondary site if/when it becomes a flying-fox roost.
