Proposed Environmental Protection (Water and Wetland Biodiversity) Amendment Policy 2022 – for information only

Subject to approval, the proposed Environmental Protection (Water and Wetland Biodiversity) Amendment Policy 2022 (Amendment Policy) will have the effect of amending the Environmental Protection (Water and Wetland Biodiversity) Policy 2019 (Water Policy) to include the environmental values (EVs), water quality objectives (WQOs) and associated aquatic ecosystems mapping (Plan) for the waters in the below table (amendment waters), in Schedule 1 of the Water Policy.

Consultation

The department has undertaken extensive consultation on the proposed Amendment Policy with relevant First Nations, community groups, environmental, government, industry and commerce, regional natural resource management bodies and research institutions. Over 90 stakeholder meetings, teleconferences and workshops were held between 2017 and 2022.

  • Through two rounds of consultation the department held over 70 meetings in South East Queensland.
  • The consultation for the Burdekin, Don and Haughton region was a continuation of substantial earlier stakeholder consultation jointly carried out by the regional Natural Resource Management Body, North Queensland Dry Tropics Limited, with the department. At least three rounds of consultation occurred, including stakeholder consultation work by the regional natural resource management body (North Queensland Dry Tropics). In the final stakeholder consultation phase, the department held over 20 meetings during the calendar year 2021.

The department has addressed matters raised during consultation and the proposed amendment reflects consultation comments/submissions.

Amendment Regions

The amendment waters of the proposed Amendment Policy include the surface and groundwaters of the Burdekin, Haughton and Don River basins, coastal waters to the limit of Queensland waters from Cape Cleveland to the southern extent of the Plane Creek Basin, estuarine and limited freshwaters of Mackay-Whitsundays, and surface waters of South-East Queensland, including Moreton Bay.
